Chikwawa is a district in the Southern Region of Malawi. The district covers an area of 4,755 sq. km. and has a population of 356,682.
The district is in the Shire Valley and home to Nchalo Estate of Illovo Sugar company and the Press Cane an ethanol manufacturing company. Chikwawa is in parts an agrarian community with main cash crops grown being tobacco and cotton. Maize, beans, soya beans and other pulses are also grown. Chikwawa is well known for its cattle stocking communities that supply beef to most parts of Malawi. Chikwawa is home to a hydro-electric power station at Kapichila, Lenqwe National Park and Majete Game reserve . Chikwawa shares boders with Mozambique to the east and to the west as well.
